About the role

Applications are invited for a Reader to join the Better Health & Care Hub with the skills and commitment to drive an ambitious vision for research and education relevant to the aims of BH&CH. The successful candidate will be based in NMPC with the expectation that they will develop and execute collaborative, internationally leading research and education to further the aims of BH&CH. We welcome applications from clinical and non-clinical academics for this role.

The role requires a strong research and education track record, demonstrating interdisciplinary engagement. The appointed Reader will be ambitious and successful in capturing external peer review grant income, delivering world leading publications and gaining significant and wide-reaching impact from their research. The Reader will contribute to the management and academic leadership of the BH&CH, building its capacity and collaborating with others to promote the aims and work of BH&CH. They will be involved in delivering high quality education and also develop and lead a research programme sustained through external peer-review funding. The Reader’s interests and activities should align with and shape at least one of the three key BH&CH themes: Careforce, Frugal Innovation, and Communities.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About You

Essential criteria

  • Higher academic degree (PhD or medical equivalent) and relevant clinical, health or social care expertise
  • Clear upward trajectory of peer-review publications with sustainable track record consistent with world-leading or internationally excellent REF outputs. These should demonstrate growing international recognition of research excellence in their field or internationally recognised leadership in their field of research with new knowledge and innovation
  • Proven ability to secure research funding, with a sustainable track record or clear potential, aligned with BH&CH research themes. Demonstrated leadership in delivering innovative, well-funded research programmes and associated outputs alongside a track record of successful capacity building, attracting PhD/MSc fellowship funding, and growing post-doctoral teams
  • Evidence of commitment to continued development in evidence-based practice, research methods and evidence relevant to BH&CH, with up-to-date and internationally recognised knowledge, skills and accomplishments
  • Demonstrated leadership in education or assessment initiatives. Experience planning and delivering high-quality evaluated education at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels with a strong focus on a high-quality student experience and success. Able to attract and supervise PhD students; and to additionally supervise MSc and undergraduate student projects
  • Appropriate academic standing to gain and retain credibility as a leader with a track record of developing others to achieve the criteria for success in UK academia including experience of encouraging and fostering development of junior members of academic staff. This should supported by proven ability to form good professional relationships at all levels
  • Be a pragmatic problem solver with knowledge of strategic development and change management/ delivery with experience of higher education senior management and the ability to work across organisational boundaries with self motivation
  • Have a strong personal commitment to the principles and practice of equality, diversity and inclusion for staff and students

Desirable criteria

  • An existing network of national and international successful collaborations that will benefit BH&CH future directions
  • Ability to identify new research opportunities and collaborative partnerships to enhance the research of BH&CH, NMPC and King’s
  • Experience of serving on grant giving and funding committees
