We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to join the Environmental Health Group as a member of a multidisciplinary project team researching environmental exposure to enteric pathogens in study sites in Brazil and Mozambique. The post-holder will work closely with local project team members and collaborators at Fiocruz in Brazil and the Mozambican National Institute of Health in Maputo, Mozambique.
The post-holder will play a critical role in the design, development, implementation, and coordination of research and laboratory protocols to investigate transmission of enteric pathogens in low-income households of Salvador, Brazil within the context of large-scale sanitation intervention. As part of this work, the post-holder will also coordinate sample analyses at laboratories in Salvador and at LSHTM. The post will require considerable travel to the study site in Salvador, Brazil. The post-holder will also contribute to the laboratory analysis, data cleaning and management, and data analysis and write-up a study to assess environmental exposures to enteric pathogen among young children in Maputo, Mozambique. Some travel to Mozambique may be required as part of this work. The post-holder will be expected to work collaboratively with study partners in both locations, including seeking opportunities for mutual learning and training.
The successful applicant will have a track record of relevant research experience, excellent communication skills, and an ability to work both independently and in close collaboration with in-country partners. The applicant should have an excellent academic track record that includes formal training in microbiology as well as a relevant PhD (public health, environmental health, environmental science or engineering, epidemiology, microbiology, or similar). The applicant should have a track record of working with enteric pathogens and some experience with the WASH sector. This includes laboratory experience with safe sample handling, culture, molecular biology (DNA extraction and qPCR) and handling human and environmental samples (stool, water, swabs, and/or blood). Experience as a study coordinator and/or managing fieldwork/survey teams is required. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post is full-time post and fixed-term until 30 September 2026. The post is funded by the EPIC project funded by Reckitt and ICA project funded by RGHI.
The salary will be on the LSHTM salary scale, Grade 6 in the range £45,097 - £51,156 per annum pro rata (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at LSHTM.
