Aston University’s Energy & Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI) is seeking a talented Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to join the UK–Saudi Waste2Energy project. This is a high-profile initiative, funded through the Gulf Strategy Fund, that will strengthen collaboration between the UK and Saudi Arabia in sustainable waste management, biochar technology, and behavioural change policy.
The role combines research, coordination, and international engagement. You will lead the development of three bilingual market reports on biochar, plastics, and municipal solid waste, working closely with stakeholders in the UK and Saudi stakeholders. You will also play a central role in planning and delivering two major events in Riyadh – a UK–Saudi showcase and a Behavioural Change Policy Forum – as well as coordinating a UK biochar technology exchange visit for Saudi partners. Alongside these activities, you will manage project monitoring and reporting, support stakeholder engagement, and contribute to communications that showcase UK expertise.
Candidates should hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in a relevant discipline such as environmental or chemical engineering, sustainability, policy studies, or the circular economy. You will have proven experience in producing high-quality research outputs, such as policy or market reports, together with experience in project management in multi-partner or international contexts. Excellent organisational and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders. A willingness to travel internationally is required.
It would be an advantage to bring knowledge of waste valorisation or biochar technology, experience of SME or B2B engagement, or familiarity with UK–Gulf collaborations. Arabic language skills or experience working with bilingual outputs would also be desirable.
Applications should include a CV, a supporting statement outlining how you meet the essential and desirable criteria, and a short writing sample (policy or technical report excerpt).
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute both intellectually and practically to a project at the interface of research, policy, and international collaboration. The PDRA will gain experience in managing a complex bilateral programme, authoring outputs with direct policy impact, and strengthening partnerships that will continue well beyond the funding period.
