The role

We wish to appoint a dynamic and enthusiastic Consultant Senior Lecturer in Pain and Anaesthetics to join the School of Psychology and Neuroscience. The service commitment will be based at North Bristol NHS Trust. The post holder will split their time equally between the two functions of this clinical academic post.

What will you be doing?

You will have a national and growing international reputation for research excellence in the pathophysiological, genetic and psychosocial causes of chronic pain. You will be encouraged to develop your own independent research programme and collaborate with other research scientists at the University of Bristol with interests in pain, neuroscience and mental health.

You will:

  • build a research group by attracting independent funding which would contribute to the indirect research income of the School.
  • contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across our programmes (including supervising MSc and PhD students) both in teaching delivery and administration. Other teaching duties will include personal tutorials, project supervision, and design, delivery, and assessment of taught content and seminar sessions on various units
  • Have general academic administrative responsibilities as specified by the Head of School(HoS)/HoS Delegate.
  • provide academic leadership for your discipline, build internal and external collaborations
  • mentor early career and mid-career researchers
  • make a positive contribution to the research culture through support of the School, Faculty and University research strategy
  • Seek to maximise the impact of your research with external partner

You will have specific clinical responsibilities as part of the Chronic Pain and Anaesthesia team at North Bristol NHS Trust.

You should apply if

  • You will have experience of and an enthusiasm for teaching and supporting undergraduate and postgraduate learning.
  • You will have depth and breadth of knowledge in an academic discipline which supports the development of new knowledge and understanding in pain research.
  • There will be external evidence - both national and international - of impactful research excellence, including a recent portfolio of outputs including those of internationally excellent or world-leading quality.
  • You will have a record of winning grant funding to support research, with evidence of ability to apply to a mixed portfolio of funders
  • You will have experience of successfully leading groups and contributing to the development of fellow academics.
  • You will be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and hold a licence to practice and will be on the GMC specialist register for Anaesthesia within 6 months of the interview date.
  • You will have a minimum of at least 7 years’ experience in Anaesthetics and Chronic Pain with recognised postgraduate experience in an approved training post or posts offering equivalent responsibility and training.
  • You will have training and independent operating experience in diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain and been independent in providing tertiary centre level anaesthesia.
