About the role

This newly created position of Deputy University Librarian offers a rare opportunity to help shape the future of Library Services at a transformative time for the university.

You’ll lead the development of a bold and inclusive vision for how our library spaces, services, and collections support the academic journey—placing user experience at the heart of everything we do. You’ll provide strategic leadership for information literacy and teaching programmes, and champion deeper academic engagement across the university.

As a key member of the senior leadership team, you’ll regularly deputise for the University Librarian & Director of Library Services, playing an active role in university-wide initiatives and ensuring Library Services remains central to Imperial’s academic mission.

What you would be doing

As Deputy University Librarian, you’ll help shape the strategic direction of Library Services as part of the Library Leadership Team. You’ll oversee Imperial’s seven academic libraries and their collections, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of our academic community.

You’ll lead and support senior colleagues including Heads of User Services and Library Liaison, and the Senior Teaching Fellow managing a team of 60 FTE staff, which represents half of the Library Services workforce. You’ll also chair the Library Content Strategy and Library Education Strategy Groups, guiding innovation in learning support and resource development.

Your role will include ensuring our library spaces and services align with the university’s Sustainable Imperial strategy, contributing to our goal of net zero by 2040. You’ll build strong partnerships across the university and with NHS trusts, helping Library Services play a key role in delivering Imperial’s Science for Humanity strategy.

What we are looking for

We’re seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking leader who brings:

  • A collaborative, inclusive, and strategic approach to developing library services, spaces, and collections.
  • A passion for information literacy and a strong grasp of how technology can enhance learning and teaching.
  • The ability to advocate for the library’s role in curriculum design and delivery, and to lead non-curricular skills training for diverse audiences.
  • A future-focused mindset, with a talent for stakeholder engagement and a commitment to maximising the visibility and impact of Library Services across the university and beyond.

Full requirements can be found in the person specification attached to this advert. Please ensure your cover letter addresses the essential criteria.

What we can offer you

  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to use science for humanity.
  • Benefit from a sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 41 days’ annual leave and generous pension schemes).
  • Access to a range of workplace benefits including a flexible working policy from day one, generous family leave packages, on-site leisure facilities and cycle-to-work scheme.
  • Interest-free season ticket loan schemes for travel.
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
