Postdoctoral Researcher - AI Engineer – PEACEPLUS ONEHEALTH Project

ATU’s JANUS Research Centre for HPC, AI and Emerging Technologies is seeking a highly motivated AI Engineer (PostDoc PD1) for ATU’s AI Engineering team within the EU-funded ONEHEALTH project, a €9.85M PEACEPLUS cross-border programme. ONEHEALTH brings together Catalyst, Queen’s University Belfast, ATU, Tyndall, University of Galway, and HIRANI to create an AI-driven Life & Health Sciences ecosystem.

The AI Engineer will support the ONEHEALTH project’s AI Accelerator strand by developing and testing applied AI/ML solutions for SMEs in human and agri-health and contribute to cross-border research integration. The role will focus on implementing models, preparing datasets, and supporting prototype delivery under the guidance of the AI Engineering Lead.

Please note: The postholder will be based at the ATU Donegal, Letterkenny Campus.

Essential Qualifications

Minimum

• PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related discipline,

OR

Honours Bachelor’s (NFQ Level 8) or Master’s (Level 9) in a relevant discipline plus 3–4 years applied professional experience in AI/ML development.

• Strong programming and applied AI/ML development skills (Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, etc.).

• Evidence of outputs such as technical reports, project deliverables, or publications.

• Ability to adapt AI/ML skills to health, agri-health, or other data-rich domains.

• Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment.

Desirable

• Familiarity with MLOps tools and workflows.

• Experience with SME innovation or applied research projects.

• Awareness of data governance and ethical AI practices.

• Exposure to HPC, cloud, or edge platforms desirable.

• Knowledge of regulatory and ethical frameworks around AI in health/agri-health
