About the Role
The Research Platforms Manager will be using specialist expertise in hardware, networking, virtualisation, git workflows, and Linux administration as part of a progressive team, to provide a high-quality service to Researchers performing world-class research across the University. The team will be required to deploy, configure, maintain, test, benchmark and document use of a range of modern high-performance hardware.

About You
A background in networking and administering a physical server installation in a datacentre will be essential.

You will be able to demonstrable experience of deploying and administering Linux servers and storage systems, along with managing firmware updates for peripherals and out-of-band management. Have Experience of configuration management using Puppet and Git, and mass deployment tools such as xCAT.

You will have good understanding of network design, switch configuration and troubleshooting. Gathering monitoring data, logs and metrics from a range of datacentre hardware, including environmental monitoring.

You will have experience of making changes to live systems using best practice methods, and proactive monitoring of systems to ensure good uptime. Making recommendations on hardware purchases and contributing to tender proposals.

You will also line management of a junior team member experience.

Additional skills will be learned on the job, with a lot of hands-on exposure to a range of hardware, making this an exciting opening for a skilled candidate wishing to work in the stimulating area of High Performance Computing.

This is a hybrid role with a mix of remote work and on-site (office or occasional datacentre visits).

About the School
The Research Platforms Manager role is responsible for assigning and overseeing support for the underlying computer hardware and network infrastructure for the ITS Research services. This covers the 12000 core, 100 GPU QM High Performance Compute cluster (see https://docs.hpc.qmul.ac.uk ), various hosted services and virtual machines. This is an excellent opportunity to have a positive impact on a diverse range of world-class research.
