Annual Leave: 25 Days plus Bank Holidays and University closures.
Location: College Lane Campus, Hatfield.
Main duties and responsibilities
Preparation of materials and equipment for practical, commercial and short course classes as required in one or more areas of the School. This will mainly involve support for specialist techniques in the Robotics area for both undergraduate and postgraduate students and occasional support in other areas within the School.
Under the direction of the Technical Team Leader, to liaise with Estates and contractors regarding management and maintenance of the demonstration and experimental areas for undergraduate and post graduate students and ensuring that the work undertaken is in line with the School requirements.
Demonstrating the safe use of testing kit, technical equipment, and specialist skills to all groups of staff and students.
Providing specialist and general assistance to students to enable them to carry out their work.
Assisting in the preparation of the laboratories and workshops for Short Courses, and other activities, and providing technical support when needed.
Assisting, when available, with consultancy work and research within the School.
Helping in the continual development of new practical sessions for teaching and short courses.
Instigating the ordering and maintenance of stock levels and minor equipment as required for practical sessions in consultation with the Program and Module Leaders and other academic staff.
Assisting with the general management and housekeeping of the laboratories and workshops, to ensure that they are maintained in a safe condition and that there are suitable levels of consumable items.
Having a thorough knowledge of the relevant safety procedures applicable to laboratory and workshops. Ensuring that these procedures are adhered to by all users. Complying with all Health and Safety regulations, both national and local rules.
Skill and experience required
Professional experience of managing and/or maintaining an efficient technical operation.
Experience and knowledge of electronics platforms (such as Arduino, microcontrollers, and FPGA) to include programming of these devices.
Specialist skills required in some or all the following: electronic system building and testing, developing new products through concept to manufacture and maintaining test equipment related to the testing and analysis of systems.
Qualifications required
Holds a minimum of A-levels or equivalent, or proven experience. A recognised qualification in an appropriate subject at degree or HNC/HND level or equivalent is desirable.
