John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford, OX3 9DU

Reporting to Kanmin Xue, Associate Professor at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Oxford, and Honorary Consultant Vitreo-retinal Surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will be a member of the Retinal Disease and Repair Group (Xue Lab) with responsibility for carrying out research to develop advanced therapies for inherited diseases of the eye as part of the new MRC Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) in Therapeutic Genomics. The post holder will provide guidance to less experienced members of the research group, including other postdocs, research assistants and PhD and project students.

The research group aims to apply the latest advances in molecular biology, immunology and neuroscience to better understand the mechanisms of retinal degeneration and develop advanced therapies for clinical trials in patients with blinding conditions. We are not only passionate about the translational potential of our work to save sight but also committed to building the skills and credentials of individual team members for their career development. The group is based at the West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, which contains state-of-the-art laboratory and clinical facilities that form an ideal environment for our translational research agenda.

The main objectives of our research programme are to: 

  • Understand the mechanisms of retinal diseases
  • Develop advanced therapies for retinal diseases (including gene augmentation, gene Editing using CRISPR, anti-sense oligonucleotides and novel biologics)
  • Translate laboratory and pre-clinical studies into clinical trials
