The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) and St John’s College, seek to appoint an Associate Professor in Modern Arabic Literature, available from September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Associate Professor is the main academic career grade at Oxford with a focus on research and teaching. This is a joint appointment: the successful candidate will be a Tutorial Fellow of St John’s College as well as a member of the Faculty, and will be responsible for pastoral care of AMES students and for acting as College Advisor for graduate students.
We are seeking an outstanding scholar and teacher with a primary research expertise in one or more fields of modern Arabic literature after c.1800. This is an exciting and demanding post in which the postholder will conduct advanced research, give lectures, classes and tutorials, supervise, support and examine students at undergraduate and graduate levels, and play a part in the administrative work of the Faculty and College.
The successful candidate will have a doctorate in the study of modern Arabic literature, with specialist expertise in the period from the nahda onwards, and a demonstrable commitment to research and publication of the highest calibre. They will be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students across the whole field of modern Arabic literature, with the personal qualities required to motivate and enthuse students to develop their interests in Arabic and related subjects; and the ability to train and guide research students. Fluency in Modern Standard Arabic is essential, along with excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.
