The role
The School of Engineering Mathematics and Technology at the University of Bristol is seeking to make an academic appointment in Financial Technology either at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor level. The successful candidate will join us at an exciting time – Bristol has a rapidly expanding profile in AI, including leading three UKRI AI hubs and the ProAI Centre for Doctoral Training. We host the UK’s national Isambard AI supercomputer and the University of Bristol was AI University of the Year in 2024. Our School has a rich interdisciplinary applications environment with particular strengths in developing the fundamentals of AI and also in applying AI in Financial Technology and other areas such as Digital Health, and Robotics and Autonomous Systems. Our new Temple Quarter Innovation Campus will open in summer 2025, strengthening our connections with the rich tech start-up community in the Bristol area.
What will you be doing?
The postholder will be expected to conduct internationally excellent research and will join our research group called the Financial Engineering Lab (FEL), which is a sub-group of the Intelligent Systems Lab (ISL). We are particularly interested in candidates who research at the interface of Fintech and AI, and in areas related to computational finance and financial engineering, for example: AI for finance, automated trading, agent-based modelling of financial systems, blockchain-based decentralised finance, and financial machine learning. The postholder will also be expected to carry out excellent research-led teaching and related admin duties to support in particular our MSc Financial Technology with Data Science. For the Associate Professor level there will be leadership responsibilities across teaching and research.
You should apply if
You should apply if your research work involves financial technology (e.g., AI for finance, decentralized finance, etc.) and you have experience in teaching in this area (or a strong desire to do so for lecturer level). For the senior lecturer/associate professor level you should have strong evidence of leadership in research, teaching and administration. For the lecturer level we are seeking future leaders in their field and so we are looking for people who can demonstrate their leadership potential. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience of large-scale data engineering on commercial cloud service stacks such as GCP, AWS, or MSAzure, and their associated machine learning platforms such as Sagemaker and Vertex, as well as candidates with experience of decentralised application development in Ethereum blockchains. For a full view of the responsibilities and our requirements, please refer to the attached candidate brochure.
