About the role
The School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow to support the research project “Technology and the (future) Human in War,” (TfHW) funded through the Leverhulme Trust Research Leaders Scheme.
TfHW is a project which will investigate the ramifications of the increasing mediation of contemporary conflict through a wide-range of complex technologies such as lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS), weaponised- Artificial Intelligence (AI), drones, cyber-operations, and technologically-enhanced soldiers. The project will address the following issues: What does this rapid technological change mean for the involvement of humans as humans in war? With technology radically reshaping when, where and how war is conducted; what are the implications for soldiers, citizens, enemies and civilians? The project engages with three case studies: Ukraine, Israel and Yemen.
As part of the project, you will author and co-author papers and an edited volume with the principal investigator for world-leading peer reviewed publications. You will present at conferences, co-lead two workshops, conduct fieldwork interviews and develop follow-on research agendas. You will have access to a generous research budget and receive proactive support towards your career development.
For one post (43028), we are looking for a candidate with expertise in cyber-operations and, ideally, the Ukrainian military/Russia-Ukraine conflict and for the second post (43027) we are looking for a candidate with expertise in technologically enhanced soldiers (neuro/bio/techno) and, ideally, the Israeli military.
About you
The ideal candidate will be interested in understanding how technological developments are changing the way that contemporary conflict is conducted and experienced and prepared to work on this agenda for the duration of the project. As the Postdoctoral Research Associate you will play a central role in the project alongside the principal investigator, second postdoctoral research associate and research assistant.
In addition to expertise in cyberoperations, you will be knowledgeable about/interested in feminist International Relations and/or Science and Technology Studies and contribute towards the innovative conceptual development which is also part of the project.
