Role Description
The Department of History is seeking to appoint an Associate Lecturer in Modern British History and Public History. You should have a PhD in an area of history relevant to the post and ideally hold an appropriate teaching qualification. You will have an emerging publication record in a relevant field with proven experience of taking responsibility for teaching and learning at undergraduate level.

This post is offered on a fixed-term basis from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2028.

Academic staff in the Department are internationally renowned for their research. We are active participants in the interdisciplinary Centre for Modern Studies and, in the Borthwick Institute for Archives, possess unique research collections.

Applicants for this post should upload a CV and a covering letter as part of their application; each will be a maximum of two A4 pages.

The successful candidate will be asked to teach existing undergraduate modules, which are likely to be as follows:

Year Two Explorations: Using and Abusing the Past in Britain, 1835-2018 (Semester 1).

Year Two Explorations: Social Science and Modern Britain, c. 1880-c. 1970 (Semester 2).

MA Option: De/colonising Memory: Public Histories of Empire, Colonialism & Postcolonialism (Semester 2).

The successful candidate will also, in addition, be asked to deliver a combination of:

  • Lectures and seminar groups on our existing core undergraduate modules.
  • Supervise BA and MA dissertations appropriate to their area of knowledge.

Role

  • To lecture, lead seminars, tutorials and other forms of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • To develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students.
  • To carry out on-going curriculum review, including module content and materials and contribute to the development of teaching and learning strategies.
  • To undertake effectively a range of administrative responsibilities.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications Needed

  • You will have a PhD in a cognate discipline relevant to the post. You should also hold an appropriate teaching qualification or be willing to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice.
  • You will have specialist knowledge in your subject area, enabling you to design, develop & deliver teaching appropriate to students in History. You will have experience of taking responsibility for teaching and learning at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. You will have the ability to supervise students at all levels.
  • You will have highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide-ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media.
