Job Ref: ITD-DIB-2026-03

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

We are recruiting an experienced Research Fellow to join Chris Drakeley’s group in the Department of Infection Biology (DIB) and the Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases.

DIB brings together pathogen molecular biology and immunology and infection research across the School.

We study the molecular biology and genetics of pathogens and interaction with their hosts, to improve understanding and control of infectious diseases and to understand how pathogens modulate virulence and interact with the human host.

Our research in immunology and infection centres on analysis of the host response to infection at the molecular, cellular and population levels. The goals are to develop a greater understanding of basic mechanisms of immunological protection versus pathology, and to apply this knowledge to the development of interventions and the identification of correlates of immune status.

To support our work on immunoepidemiology, we are recruiting an experienced Research Fellow. The primary responsibilities of this role are to support the development and deployment of multi-disease sero-surveillance assays with technical refinement, quality control, and training of collaborating partners.

Successful candidates must have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic such as biology, immunology or diagnostic, relevant experience and expertise in laboratory and/or diagnostic assay development, particularly in serological and multiplex assays in malaria, vaccine preventable or other infectious diseases. Further essential experience in developing SOPs and managing laboratory projects, organising and facilitating international transfers of consumables and specifics and finally a willingness and ability to travel outside the UK several times a year are required. Experience in recombinant protein production and purification is beneficial. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post is fixed term until 08 September 2028 and full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE. The post is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is available from March 2026. The salary will be on the LSHTM scale, Grade 6 in the range £45,728 - £51,872 per annum pro rata (inclusive of London Weighting).

The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at LSHTM.

Applications should be made on-line via our jobs website. Online applications will be accepted by the automated system until 10pm of the closing date. Any queries regarding the application process may be addressed to jobs@lshtm.ac.uk. Please quote reference ITD-DIB-2026-03.

The supporting statement section should set out how your qualifications, experience and training meet each of the selection criteria. Please provide one or more paragraphs addressing each criterion. The supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered.
