About the role

These two posts are an outstanding development opportunity for talented individuals who wish to advance excellent and innovative research and education, especially on the care and support of children and young people with life limiting conditions or medical complexity, their families and the workforce that care for them.

These two Lecturer positions will be working with our Chair of Palliative Care and Child Health, Lorna Fraser.

Post 1 will support an NIHR funded programme, Improving Care for children with life-limiting Conditions: developing, adapting, impLementing and Evaluating interventions (ICICLE).

Post 2 will support the Kentown Centre of Excellence studies on social care and economic evaluation.

In both positions you will contribute to new grant applications and advise on studies to completion and publication, including supervision of research team members. You will also contribute to teaching, including module leadership and admissions roles and provide PhD and MSc supervision.

Post 1 - This post will be full-time (35 hours) in the Cicely Saunders Institute and will be funded until 30/11/2029 in the first instance.

Post 2 - This maternity leave cover post will be full-time (35 hours) in the Cicely Saunders Institute and will be funded for 12 months

We particularly seek applicants with experience and expertise of one or more of the following: developing or evaluating complex interventions, research in child health, especially those with complex or life-limiting conditions, or palliative care.

Location: Hybrid – minimum of 2 days per week on campus (Denmark Hill)

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. PhD or equivalent relevant to themes of the Faculty and this role
  2. Evidence of ability to secure research grant funding, demonstrated by previous experience or track record, involvement in research active teams, responsibilities, plans, awareness of funding schemes relevant to Faculty research themes
  3. Track record of peer-review publication and presentations that demonstrate international excellence or are world-leading in terms of originality, rigour, and significance in areas relevant to Faculty research themes and this role
  4. Evidence of continued development in research methods in health services or clinical research, with increasing expertise in specific areas relevant to the Faculty (e.g. intervention development, implementation science, robust evaluation designs, mixed methods study designs and patient and public involvement)
  5. Experience of the planning and delivering high-quality evaluated education at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels with a strong focus on a high-quality inclusive student experience and success
  6. Ability to work well as an effective and inclusive member of teams and networks and to share and encourage good practice in teaching and research and to inspire and motivate others, including in challenging environments
  7. Experience of Research Ethics AND governance procedures to undertake research within the UK National Health Service

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience of co-leading/leading research projects in child health
  2. Experience of and training in PhD supervision, as first or second supervisory and/or as part of supervisory progression panels
  3. Experience of innovative and effective approaches to teaching, including distance learning, blended learning, digital learning and or simulation (virtual and/or face to face), with appropriate training completed
  4. Experience of leading PPIE activities with children or parents
