Associate Professor in International Law, Global Governance, or International Relations (all genders). Full-time (40 h/w) in Vienna, Austria

Modul University Vienna is seeking a scholar for an Associate Professor position with outstanding qualifications in International Law, Global Governance, or International Relations. In the case of exceptional candidates, there may be the possibility to appoint at Full Professor level.

The position is integrated into the School of International Relations, and the applicants are expected to conduct cutting-edge research in the fields of International Law, Global Governance, or International Relations, to support the development of the University’s new undergraduate program in this area, and to teach undergraduate and graduate courses (see www.modul.ac.at/study-programs). This is a full-time position for applicants who are willing to work 40 hours per week.

Candidates are expected to engage in the existing research program at Modul University Vienna and should also bring their own research agenda to contribute to research projects. Experience in grant application writing is highly appreciated. Furthermore, candidates are expected to actively engage in research collaboration within and outside the University. Teaching responsibilities shall include courses in International Law, Global Governance, or International Relations delivered within the IR School.

Desired skills and essential qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in research and teaching and a comprehensive understanding of widely used concepts and methodologies in selected topics within International Law, Global Governance, or International Relations. Therefore, candidates should have a record of or clear potential for excellent research and student mentorship.

The successful candidate is expected to have outstanding qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree or PhD in International Law, International Relations, or Global Governance, or a related field;
  • Habilitation or evidence of an equivalent research qualification, including a strong research focus (ideally a track record of research projects), and the capability of publishing in top-tier journals in the respective field;
  • Strong methodological skills (qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods);
  • Commitment to high-quality teaching;
  • Ability to attract external funding to support research programs and to successfully build collaborative research programs with other universities, research institutes, and industry;
  • Excellent spoken and written English language skills; proficiency in German is not required but welcome.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will teach courses in undergraduate and graduate programs offered by Modul University Vienna. The teaching load for this position is planned to be 7.5 units/week per semester (1 unit = 45 minutes of teaching). The actual teaching load will depend on the profile of the candidate. The new colleague will be expected to further develop their research agenda. In addition to teaching and research, the candidate is expected to contribute to administrative and academic services and to be interested in outreach activities. Within the School, the successful candidate is invited to contribute to the School’s engagement activities.

Remuneration

  • The initial annual gross salary is EUR 80,000 (on Associate Professor level) before taxes (plus approx. 30% Arbeitgeberanteil = employer contribution to the social security and pension fund, paid under Austrian Law). The University offers opportunities for additional remuneration for extra teaching and outstanding scholarships.
