Contract: Full-time, fixed term (26 months)

An exciting opportunity is available for a highly motivated graduate or postgraduate to lead a strategic Knowledge Transfer Partnership between Brunel University of London and Rollagranola. This project focuses on reducing energy consumption, improving product quality, and developing innovative, sustainable, and cost-efficient baking processes within a rapidly growing food business.

Brunel University of London is a leading multidisciplinary, research-intensive university with strong industry partnerships. Rollagranola, founded in 2014, has grown from a kitchen start-up into a premium cereal brand with a turnover exceeding £5.5 million. Following a recent expansion to a new production facility in Hertfordshire, the company is entering an exciting phase of growth, driven by innovation, quality, and sustainability.

The successful candidate will take full responsibility of the project, leading the analysis and optimisation of industrial baking processes. This includes identifying operating conditions that balance energy efficiency with main product attributes such as texture, moisture, colour, and shelf life. The role involves designing and conducting experimental trials, implementing optimisation strategies, and contributing to the development of a pilot-scale oven system.

The main aspect of the role is the transfer of academic knowledge into practical industrial application. The Associate will adapt proven engineering and technological solutions to a food manufacturing context, combining hands-on practical work with data-driven analysis. The ability to approach challenges in a structured, analytical, and innovative way will be essential.

The main responsibilities include:

  • Managing a strategic, high-value project from concept through to implementation
  • Translating academic expertise into commercially viable solutions
  • Driving innovation in baking processes and energy efficiency
  • Engaging with stakeholders across both organisations, including production teams and senior management
  • Reporting progress, presenting findings, and supporting strategic decision-making

The role also offers valuable commercial exposure through engagement with clients and suppliers, as well as participation in international industry events and conferences.

Candidate Profile:

A First-Class or 2:1 Honours degree, MSc, or PhD in Food Science, Food Technology, Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Strong technical knowledge in Food science, Food processing, Engineering, Technology.
  • Experience in experimental design and data analysis
  • Ability to develop optimisation models (e.g., using ANSYS, COMSOL, or similar tools)
  • Excellent project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Desirable:

  • Industrial experience in food manufacturing and operations
  • Knowledge of cereal processing and sustainability

We are particularly interested in candidates who are inquisitive, practical, and adaptable, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels. You should be comfortable working hands-on in a dynamic production environment, while maintaining a clear focus on project objectives and responding to new opportunities as they arise.

This role offers a unique opportunity to lead a high-impact industrial innovation project at the interface of academia and industry. You will develop advanced technical expertise, leadership capability, and commercial awareness, and will be well positioned to progress into a permanent management role and a future leadership career in sustainable food manufacturing.
