About us
UCL Mechanical Engineering has been pioneering the development of engineering education, having taught the core discipline for over 170 years. Today our students are taught core engineering disciplines and supervised in individual and group research projects by academics that are recognised research world-leaders in their fields. The Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering group is a team within the Mechanical Engineering department which runs MSc courses in naval architecture and marine engineering, as well as an undergraduate minor in Ocean Engineering. The team comprises UCL academic staff, academic staff provided by the Ministry of Defence and PhD student researchers.

About the role
This vacancy is for a Research Fellow to carry out world-leading research in maritime engineering, support our naval architecture and marine engineering MSc courses with teaching activities. The appointment is for fixed period of two years, but the contract may be extended, subject to available funding. This research would ideally complement existing areas of activity of the team such as: fluid-structure interaction on marine structures including ships, offshore platforms, renewable energy devices; polar engineering including structure/wave/ice interaction; fluid dynamics with AI for low carbon shipping and advanced data analytics for maritime system performance.
The appointment is for fixed period of two years, but the contract may be extended, subject to available funding. Grade: 7 Spine Point 32 £46,261 (including £5,197 London allowance) per annum (to be decided)
About you
The role holder must have a PhD in naval architecture or ocean engineering or a closely related discipline. They will have a demonstrated record of conducting high quality research resulting in high quality publications and experience in university-level teaching including practical and laboratory classes. They will have the ability to create and foster effective relationships with other universities or/and industry and other external stakeholders.
