Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity for an Associate Tutor to join the teaching team and support the School of Psychological Sciences this Autumn 2026. 

  • Academic Skills for Psychology (Level 4)
  • 3 hours per week
  • Monday (2-5pm) and/or evenings (6-9pm) - please indicate preference.

Your role will be to support teaching, in order to enable students to complete their studies successfully and undertake related course administrative duties as required. 

Your main responsibility will be preparation and running studying skills focused seminar, teaching, and marking assessments on the Academic Skills for Psychology first year, level 4 module. This also includes marking assessments and reassessments which may fall outside the contracted teaching hours, i.e. marking for assessments in January 2027 and the summer reassessment period.

Most incumbents of roles at this level will be employed as part of their general academic development and will be undertaking this work independently but in parallel with postgraduate studies.

In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack below, candidates must have:

  • A first degree in Psychology or an equivalent relevant qualification.  
  • Advanced experience in using a range of statistical techniques and report writing suitable for quantitative psychological science research.
  • Awareness of the needs of part-time adult learners and ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn.
  • Confident presentation skills and ability to clearly and effectively pass on specialist subject area knowledge.   
  • A good working knowledge of SPSS.
  • A good level of IT and Communication Technology skills particularly in application to standard packages (eg Word, Excel, e-mail, internet usage).

Contract

Fixed-term, part-time contract. Please submit an application form for consideration. Remuneration

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service (starting rate £61.39 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. Hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at x2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
