Are you an exceptional architectural educator who can help students connect ambitious design thinking with technical resolution, building adaptation and the realities of contemporary architectural practice?

About the role

The University of Plymouth is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Architecture to join a dynamic and ambitious architecture team.

We are looking for an outstanding educator with expertise in architectural design, technical design development, building adaptation, retrofit or related fields, who can help students develop imaginative and critically informed architectural proposals that are both ambitious and technically robust.

You will contribute across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through design studio teaching, curriculum development, assessment and academic support. Working within a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, you will enable students to integrate spatial, material, technical, environmental and social considerations within coherent design proposals and develop an understanding of how architectural ideas are translated into buildable and adaptable interventions.

You will contribute to a forward-looking educational environment committed to design excellence, technical literacy and responsible stewardship of the built environment.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering high-quality design studio teaching, tutorials and assessment across Architecture programmes.
  • Guiding students in developing creative, technically informed and environmentally responsible design proposals.
  • Supporting the integration of technical design development, material understanding and building adaptation within architectural education.
  • Contributing to curriculum development, module leadership and enhancement activities.
  • Engaging in scholarly, professional or knowledge-exchange activity that strengthens teaching and maintains contemporary relevance.

Due to the nature of the role, unfortunately we are unable to accommodate working from home.

For an informal discussion to find out more about the role then please contact Dr Ricky Burke: by email at ricky.burke@plymouth.ac.uk by telephone on 01752 585159.

What we’re looking for

We are seeking an architectural educator who can demonstrate:

  • A degree and/or professional qualification in Architecture and a strong understanding of contemporary architectural education and practice.
  • Experience of studio teaching, design tutoring and assessment within architecture or closely related design disciplines.
  • Expertise in architectural design, technical design development, building adaptation and adaptive reuse, retrofit, material systems, environmental design or related areas of contemporary practice.
  • The ability to lead design-led teaching that integrates creativity, technical understanding, environmental responsibility and critical enquiry.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, together with a commitment to inclusive and student-centred education.

We are particularly interested in candidates who combine strong design expertise with an ability to help students understand the relationship between architectural thinking, technical development and the transformation of existing environments. Professional practice, design research and interdisciplinary collaboration are welcomed, but excellence in teaching and design education will be central to success in this role.
