This is an opportunity to make a visible and lasting contribution to UAL’s distinctive Costume for Theatre and Screen course and play a pivotal role inspiring students to develop the creative confidence, technical understanding and professional awareness to contribute meaningfully to theatre, screen and performance.

As Senior Lecturer and Year Leader for BA Costume for Theatre and Screen (maternity cover position), you’ll play a central role in shaping an ambitious, inclusive and critically engaged learning experience for a diverse community of undergraduate students. Combining academic leadership, teaching and pastoral responsibility, you’ll ensure that the course remains responsive to contemporary costume practice, emerging research and the evolving needs of the theatre, screen and wider performance industries.

Working collaboratively with the Course Leader and wider course team, you’ll lead teaching and curriculum delivery across the programme, bringing specialist costume expertise, professional insight and fresh ideas to the student experience.

The role also offers scope to influence assessment, course enhancement, student recruitment, knowledge exchange and public-facing activity across the programme.

About you

You’ll be an enthusiastic and credible costume specialist, with proficient costume making skills and experience in cutting and pattern alterations, who can combine subject expertise with thoughtful, inclusive and student-centred leadership.

You’ll bring:

  • A degree in costume or a closely related subject
  • Experience of teaching and assessing costume in higher education, or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience of leading or coordinating curriculum delivery, such as a module, unit or programme area
  • Strong knowledge of current professional costume practice and developments within the field
  • Evidence of research, teaching, knowledge exchange or professional practice that advances the discipline
  • A genuine commitment to building positive relationships with students and understanding the different experiences they bring to their studies.

A postgraduate qualification, teaching qualification and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy would be advantageous.
