The estates department

The Estates Department takes great pride in fostering a thriving physical environment, upholding a standard of excellence in presentation and supporting our staff, students, visitors and everyone who uses our facilities. Our mission is to provide a professional, cost effective estates management service that ensures the University's academic and research activities can proceed safely and efficiently. We aim to cultivate an environment that instils pride in our community and supports sustainable learning activities for all.

Responsibilities of the department include managing the estates strategy, property maintenance, property management, facilities management and health, safety and environmental oversight.

Building Maintenance Operative

We are now recruiting for a skilled and motivated Building Maintenance Operative to join our Estates team. Working across our campuses in Cheltenham and Gloucester, you will support the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance, statutory compliance works and minor projects across the University's estate.

This is a varied, hands-on role requiring a broad range of building maintenance skills. You will undertake repairs and maintenance activities across a wide range of building fabric and services, including painting and decorating, fire safety works, drainage repairs, plant room inspections and general building maintenance. You will also supervise external contractors, support planned preventative maintenance programmes and work closely with colleagues across Estates and Facilities Management teams.

The successful candidate will hold a relevant City & Guilds or NVQ qualification, have experience within building, mechanical or electrical maintenance environments and possess excellent customer service and communication skills. Due to the nature of the role a full UK driving licence is essential, as is a flexible approach to work and a commitment to maintaining a safe, inclusive and well-presented campus environment.

The role forms part of the Estates out-of-hours emergency call out rota, providing a first response to building related incidents and helping ensure the continued operation of our estate.

Aside from the opportunity to work within a supportive and professional Estates team, you will also be eligible for 35 days annual leave (plus bank holidays and University closure days), enrolment into our pension scheme*, access to Vivup employee benefits and discounts, and ongoing training and development opportunities.

*Successful applicants with evidence of current, continuous membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) or the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) will be eligible to continue membership of the scheme.
