AI & Automation Developer

About the Role
This role sits within IT Services as part of the AI & Automation (AAA) Programme, a strategic initiative to embed artificial intelligence and automation across Queen Mary University of London’s operations. The programme is building a secure, cloud-native AI platform on Microsoft Azure and Kubernetes, which will serve as the university’s central capability for deploying LLM-powered agents and automation workflows.

About You
The AI & Automation Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining LLM-powered agents and microservices on the university’s AI platform. The role focuses on the full lifecycle of AI application development: writing production-quality code in Python and Go, building and optimising AI agents, developing rigorous evaluation and testing frameworks for LLM outputs, and ensuring that agents perform reliably, cost-effectively, and safely.

This is a hands-on development role requiring deep technical skill in modern cloud-native development and a strong interest in the rapidly evolving field of AI/LLM engineering.

The postholder will hold a bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience.

The postholder will contribute directly to use cases that improve services for students, academics, and professional services staff across the university.

About the Department
The AI Platform Developer will join a small, high-impact engineering team responsible for building, testing, and operating the core platform and its initial use cases. The role reports to the Programme Director for AI Automation, App & Strategy and works closely with solution architects, product owners, and stakeholders from across the university.
