School of Business, Education and Law
£41,071 - £46,050 per annum, pro rata
Fixed term for 12 months (maternity cover)
Part-time, 0.4 FTE
We are seeking to appoint a Secondary Science University Practitioner (0.4 FTE) to join our Department of Initial Teacher Education in the School of Business, Education, and Law.
The Department of Initial Teacher Education is a vibrant community, supporting trainee teachers across all phases, early years, primary, secondary and further education, in close partnership with our extensive network of partner schools. Our mission is to develop professional educators who transform the learning and life opportunities of the children, young people and adults they work with. Through inclusive practice, reflective enquiry and a commitment to continuous professional development, we empower our trainees to become autonomous practitioners who enable all learners to realise their potential.
You’ll teach secondary science to our trainee teachers and help each of them build the subject knowledge they need to teach with confidence. You’ll also hold the pastoral role for the science trainees, acting as their mentor and first point of contact so they have someone to turn to for guidance, encouragement and support throughout their training year.
You’ll need to be available for one full week each term. Any days you work beyond your usual working pattern during these weeks will be given back as time off in lieu.
You will hold a teaching qualification with QTS and a Master's degree (or equivalent) in education or a related subject. With experience as a secondary science teacher in England, you’ll know the secondary science national curriculum in depth to help trainees understand both what to teach and why it is taught that way.
You’ll also have experience of helping other professionals develop, whether through mentoring, coaching, supervision, professional learning or school partnership work. You’ll work comfortably with trainee teachers, mentors and school colleagues, and you’ll care about helping them grow in confidence and skill.
This post is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check. Regular status checks may also be required, depending on your role.
This is a fixed-term appointment for 12 months, however, as the post is linked to a maternity absence, the end date is subject to change.
As a Practitioner, we expect you to be actively engaged in practice in addition to your role at the University. This can be either through paid employment with another employer, paid consultancy or freelance work.
The University is deeply committed to equality and diversity for all its students and staff. We seek to be diverse and inclusive, supporting individuals and groups to fulfil their potential and nurture a sense of belonging. We strive to be an accessible, inclusive employer, removing barriers for all. Find out more about our approach to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, including our commitments and accreditations as a Disability Confident Leader, Stonewall Top 100 Employer, Athena Swan Silver Award holder and Race Equality Charter Bronze Award holder.
