Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with Professor Jason Micklefield at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB, http://www.mib.ac.uk), for two years starting from January 2020. The project is funded by the Royal Society International Collaboration Awards and will involve collaboration with Professor Roberto Berlinck, Universidade de Sao Paulo in Brazil.
The project aims to discover, characterise and engineer new biosynthetic pathways to next generation antibiotics that are urgently required to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and to treat neglected tropical diseases (NTD) in the developing world. We will focus on pathways to nonribosomal peptide and polyketide natural products. New approaches will be developed for engineering nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS), polyketide synthase (PKS) and tailoring enzymes to create antibiotic assembly lines in Streptomyces or related bacterial hosts.
You will join a large interdisciplinary team of biologists and chemists in the MIB. Funding is also available for travel to visit collaborators in Sao Paulo, Brazil. You must hold a PhD, or have equivalent postdoctoral experience in enzymology/biochemistry and/or molecular biology/microbial genetics.
