We are looking to expand our vibrant Mechanical Engineering community through recruitment to a number of academic positions.  We are looking for individuals who will contribute to maintaining our welcoming, inclusive, diverse and inspiring environment for our students, and whose expertise will complement and enhance our existing research capabilities. Following an exciting expansion of our facilities we are keen to expand in our key research areas: experimental fluid mechanics, energy research, tribology (including rail) and dynamics

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about both research and teaching, and who are keen to explore new collaborations and new approaches where possible.  We recognise that applicants will come with a range of experience, and we will make our assessments based on your career stage and your potential to make a positive difference to our departmental activities and culture.  Mentorship and training will be provided during your probationary period in order to help with your transition into the Department.

Mechanical Engineering has been a major discipline in the University of Sheffield since its foundation in 1905 and is a thriving department within the University's Faculty of Engineering. We are one of the UK’s leading departments of Mechanical Engineering, and are home to over 1000 students (Undergraduate, Postgraduate Taught and Postgraduate Research), over 60 academic staff. The year 2021 is an exciting time for you to join our department as we have recently moved into our new £50m home – the Engineering Heartspace!

You will need to hold a good first degree and PhD that aligns with the areas we are focusing on. You will have research experience and plans that are complementary to those detailed. In addition, you will need to demonstrate how you plan to conduct a high-quality programme of research, including attracting external funding from a range of sources, publishing work in high quality peer-reviewed journals, attending conferences and building an international profile.

Furthermore, you will carry out teaching duties including designing, delivering, assessing and reviewing teaching programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Initially, you will be allocated a lighter than average teaching load (typically just one 10 credit course), and little or no administrative duties to allow you to focus on establishing your research career. We will also provide a generous support package to ensure rapid progress in your research activity.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
