Cambridge Smart Plastics Ltd (CSP) is excited to be advertising one full-time position as Researcher in our new and dynamic start-up. This is a unique opportunity to join the team as one of its first employees and start the journey with the founders.

We are looking for somebody to help develop ‘smart packaging’ based on cellulose nanostructures. The focus of your project is to develop the wet chemistry of dynamic crosslinking through hydroxyl groups, and -jointly with the team- investigate processing procedures for coating of thin multi-layer films involving the crosslinked nanocellulose, and characterise its oxygen and water permeation. The project is co-sponsored by Unilever, so interaction with their R&D will be a part of your work. We work in shared facilities at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge.

We are looking for an experienced research scientist with PhD in Chemistry or Materials and practical experience in organic synthesis.  Pre-PhD graduates should also consider applying, as the post could be adjusted for that level.

Applications will be reviewed as soon as possible as they come in, with interviews run for all shortlisted candidates.The candidate would ideally start as soon as possible in Spring 2022 (ideally February or March, but this is negotiable for the right candidate).

The post will be a fixed term appointment for 12 months in the first instance, with an extension depending on performance and funding available. The salary for this post is £32,000 - £40,000 per annum, depending on experience. Discretionary bonuses are also considered for top performance.

Person Profile

Education & qualifications

  • A good first degree (2.1 or equivalent)
  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science

Specialist knowledge & skills

  • Ability to pursue research tasks through to completion
  • Strong background in organic synthesis
  • Experience in polymer film processing
