Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/Associate position to join the Department of Engineering at Manchester Met University. The overarching goal is to test the use of paper digestate from anaerobic digestion as water replacement in concrete making and for bioenergy production (biogas).

The RA is required to carry out essential experimental work, produce high quality research outputs and get involved in dissemination activities at selected events. The RA will be based at the Advanced Materials and Surface Engineering (AMSE) Research Centre and various labs located in the Tower building, which are fully equipped with anaerobic digestion facilities, analytical devices for testing and characterization (HPLC, ICP, SEM, FTIR and EDX). Additionally, the mapping of paper mill processes will be conducted at the industry partner site (based in Greater Manchester), whilst some of the work involving making and testing of concrete will be conducted at the collaborator's HEI (Leeds Beckett University). This project advances the knowledge of renewable methane production from waste in which advanced anaerobic digestion will play a fundamental role in providing a circular solution to the paper sector, which AMSE is committed to further develop.

Essential requirements:

  • At least a 2:1 degree in Chemical Engineering or Civil and/or Structural Engineering or closely related disciplines.
  • Experience in publishing high quality research outputs with a track record of refereed journal publications.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.

Desirable experience:

- Experience in anaerobic digestion, biogas optimisation and biomass characterisation.

- Alternatively, experience in concrete making and testing against EN BS standards; additional knowledge of ANSYS Mechanical for structural simulation will be advantageous.

A full description of essentials/desirable attributes is provided in the Job Description document. It is expected that the successful applicant will undertake the training on methods required to fulfil the project deliverables in either discipline not covered by their degree, e.g. either chemical or civil engineering. This will be provided by the project investigators.
