Cardiff Metropolitan University’s School of Sport & Health Sciences has a clear ambition – to deliver employability-focused education and impactful research. Following an exceptional performance over recent years, we are excited to offer a brand new opportunity as a Deputy Dean in Research & Innovation to drive our ambition. This is a unique opportunity for someone seeking a strategic leadership role to make a great impact in the development of the School’s research and innovation strategic goals.

As our Deputy Dean, you will be an experienced academic leader with the ability to think dynamically and entrepreneurially about the School’s ambitions and be able to align and motivate staff at all levels to achieve our strategic objectives. You’ll be responsible for ensuring the School’s strategy is distinctive and relevant to external stakeholders, including health partners, government, funders, regulatory bodies such as the UKRI, NGBs and our wider community.

You’ll play an important role in fostering and developing collaborations and partnerships both within the University and with wider academic and research communities locally, nationally and internationally.

In addition, you will assist the Dean in leading an integrated, inclusive whole School strategy; performing horizon scanning for the development of new opportunities at home and abroad. You’ll create and support a healthy research environment, ensuring agreed research outcomes and expectations is made, with an emphasis on impact and funded research, innovation and/or knowledge exchange activities.

What we’re looking for

With a clear vision for the achievement of the School’s research and innovation strategic goals; you’ll be able to demonstrate a successful track record in the leadership and management of research and innovation relevant to the School of Sport and Health Sciences. You’ll be experienced in forging, developing and maintaining partnerships and managing external networks with relevant stakeholders locally and internationally. With an appreciation and understanding of current issues affecting the sport and/or health environment, you’ll be able to communicate and disseminate complex and conceptual ideas in a variety of ways to a wide variety of audiences. Experience of providing academic leadership and first line support/mentoring for colleagues including the fair allocation of work according to skills and capacity is also highly important.

A strong belief in and commitment to the values and purpose of the University and its role in Wales and the wider world is crucial. In addition, you will have an unquestionable track-record of integrity, resilience, openness and honesty, with a strong and proactive approach to equality, diversity and social mobility throughout the University and beyond.

A first degree or a higher degree of relevance to sport or health and an earned doctoral level qualification or relevant professional experience appropriate to the post is also essential.

Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences (CSSHS) has a global reputation for the quality of its teaching, research and innovation in the areas of sport and health sciences. Based across the Cyncoed and Llandaff campuses staff work in partnership with students, industry, health boards, sport national governing bodies and others to deliver employability focused education and impactful research. Research undertaken in the School has a strong applied base and CSSHS is home to several centres of excellence including the Centre for Health, Activity and Wellbeing, the Food Industry Centre, the Youth Physical Development Centre, and the Sport Coaching Hub.
