About us

The Institute of Making is a cross-faculty research hub physically based within the Faculty of Engineering. It is a multidisciplinary research club for those interested in the made world: from makers of molecules to makers of buildings, synthetic skin to spacecraft, soup to clothes, furniture to cities. It brings together students and academic staff from across UCL to provide a creative home in which to collaborate, innovate, contemplate and understand making from a wide range of disciplines. At the heart of the Institute of Making are its facilities, which include the Makespace and the Materials Library.

About the role

The Makespace Technician is responsible for the day-to-day management and administration of the Makespace, including the workshop staff and membership community. The post-holder will provide expertise in a wide range of machining and making techniques. The post-holder will be required to carry out regular inspections to assess the maintenance of the equipment, and liaise with suppliers when repairs are required.

They will also carry out frequent spot checks of users to monitor user compliance within the operating policy. The Technician will carry out frequent training sessions with potential users ranging from basic instruction through to in-depth training for specific machines and techniques. The post-holder will maintain accurate records of all training sessions carried out, as well as the details of each user’s level of certification.

This post is being recruited for on a fixed-term basis whilst the current post-holder is on secondment. The post will be based at Bloomsbury (London).

About you

The post-holder must have a degree or demonstrable equivalent experience in a materials, making or engineering related subject, which enables them to provide high-level advice to students, fellow staff, and researchers on technical issues regarding materials, concept, design process, CAD, manufacture, finish, assembly and/or installation of work. Must have worked within a student or shared workshop environment with responsibility for an assembly of complex tasks, from ceramics to fine art to engineering and technical design applications, and the development of innovative projects.

Experience of advising others regarding design, materials, manufacture etc in either a commercial, educational, or Makespace environment. Experience in teaching, mentoring or demonstrating skills or crafts. Must be able to use a number of precision workshop equipment such as: 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines, 3D laser scanners, lathes, milling and cutting machines, and computer-controlled equipment.
