Salary: £30,502 to £42,155 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 25th November 2022

The MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR, http://www.cvr.ac.uk/) and School of Computer Science (https://www.gla.ac.uk/computing) are looking to recruit a Data Scientist to join the computational biology research laboratories of Prof David L Robertson and Dr Ke Yuan.

The project’s focus will be the poultry disease, infectious bronchitis, which has both a major economic and animal health impact and is caused by infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). The aim is to characterise determinants of pathogeniticy in IBV associated with genetic mutations in whole genome sequencing data that cause reversion of live attenuated IBV vaccines, and link these to host cellular processes using transcriptomics data. The experimental work will be carried out by experimental collaborators at the Pirbright Institute led by Dr Graham Freimanis. This post will involve using bioinformatics, evolutionary and machine learning methods to analyse existing and novel IBV genome and spatial transcriptomics datasets. The post holder will work with researchers based in the School of Computer Science, University of Glasgow, (https://www.gla.ac.uk/computing), MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) (https://bioinformatics.cvr.ac.uk) and Pirbright Institute (https://www.pirbright.ac.uk).

The successful candidate will be a motivated individual with ideally a Masters or PhD level training in a relevant field, driven by scientific curiosity, who has a publication record appropriate for their career stage and scientific background. Ideally, you will have a track record or keen interest in artificial intelligence and machine learning, and an understanding of computational biology and bioinformatics. Experience with genomics, virology and evolutionary biology would be an advantage.

We welcome applications from candidates who hold a Scottish Credit and Qualification level 10 (Honours degree) in a relevant subject such as computer science, statistics, computational and/or evolutionary biology, ideally with experience of a biological domain; may be working towards a post-graduate qualification such as a Masters (Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 11) or PhD (Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12) or equivalent professional qualifications in a relevant academic/research discipline, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

The post is full time and has funding for up to 24 months, with a start date of no later than 1 March 2023.
