The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is a research institute within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI is an entitythat brings together nine partnersto create an independent organisation with a strong voice for research and innovation, more information can be found at www.ukri.org.
An opportunity is available for a postdoctoral researcher to work with Dr Tanmay Bharat to study the assembly of prokaryotic cell envelopes using electron tomography and live cell fluorecence imaging. The project aims to investigate the role of molecules in the assembly of prokaryotic surface layers.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who will thrive in a laboratory with a friendly and supportive atmosphere. In addition to using biochemical and cellular approaches, this project will provide opportunities to perform studies using electron cryotomography and subtomogram averaging and learn how to prepare thin specimens using focused ion beam milling. You should have a PhD in a relevant subject or be due to complete within 6 months and a strong desire to study prokaryotic cell surfaces using electron tomography.
The position would suit someone with an extensive background in biochemistry and cell biology. Experience with live cell optical microscopy or cryoEM or cryoET would be particularly advantageous, but is not essential as we can train you in these methods.
The successful applicant will be awarded a 3-year Career Development Fellowship/ Postdoctoral Training Scheme position. This is a training and development position for a Postdoctoral Scientist who has recently completed their doctoral studies, is moving into a new research discipline or has limited experience of key transferable skills. The MRC LMB has excellent scientific core facilities and training opportunities.
Working for UKRI provides a whole host of benefits including a defined benefit pension scheme and excellent holiday entitlement (40 ½ days including bank holidays and privilege days). You will also have access to employee shopping and travel discounts, on-site sport and social facilities, as well as a salary sacrifice scheme for cycle to work.
This role qualifies for endorsement by UKRI for a UK Global Talent Visa, for which the successful applicant is likely to be eligible to apply. Immigration costs (visa and health surcharge) can be reclaimed from UKRI after taking up the post (terms and conditions apply).
