The ICRC’s Regional Delegation to the UK and Ireland has offices in London and Belfast, undertaking operations and diplomacy.  The aim is to support and improve decision-making, policy and practice on conflict, humanitarian action, and IHL, and the UK and Ireland’s support for ICRC action.  About the role

The delegation is offering a Policy and Public Affairs internship at its office in London, for a period of up to one year.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Policy and Public Affairs intern, reporting to the delegation’s Head of Policy:

  • Supports the delegation’s humanitarian diplomacy strategy as directed, inc.
    • Monitoring and assessment of relevant Government and Parliamentary activity in the UK and Ireland
    • Oversight of a selection of policy issues, including drafting analysis
    • Maintenance of certain key external relationships
    • Timely preparation of minutes of meetings and events attended
  • Supports ICRC HQ and field offices in engagement with relevant senior visits, inc.
    • Preparation and coordination of ICRC visits to UK and Ireland
    • Identification and support to senior UK/IRE visitors to ICRC HQ / delegations
    • Preparation of briefing packs and mission reports
  • Team Administration
    • Assists as necessary, including monthly reporting and internal database management.

Required qualifications & skills

  • Fluent in spoken and written English (essential).
  • Knowledge of the ICRC and its activities (essential).
  • A Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in politics, international relations or related (essential).
  • Excellent knowledge of UK politics (essential).
  • Prior work experience, including voluntary experience – particularly in government, military, or international organisations, or in the fields of international relations, humanitarian policy and diplomacy (essential).
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, ability to bring together complex information in an easy-to-read format (essential).
  • Strong research, drafting, analytical and writing skills (essential).
  • Parliamentary experience (desired).
  • Knowledge of Irish politics (desired).

  • Understanding of how to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
  • Flexibility and ability to efficiently handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work well within a team.

Further Details

This is a full-time internship position (35 hours per week).  Additionally, we offer:

  • Competitive renumeration based on skills, qualifications, and experience. The salary range for this role starts at £27,456 per annum.
  • London Underground travel (zones 1 and 2)
  • 28 days annual leave.
