Lecturer in Lens and Time-based Art Histories

Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London - History of Art

Location: London
Salary: From £47,193 per annum, inclusive of LWA
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 11th January 2023
Closes: 10th February 2023
Job Ref: 549

The Courtauld Institute of Art is the UK’s leading institution for teaching and research in Art History and the conservation of paintings. It is also home to one of the finest small art museums in the world, which reopened to the public in November 2021 following a major transformation. The History of Art department has an outstanding research and teaching record from Late Antiquity to the Contemporary with an increasingly global outlook, and embraces its diversity of theoretical approaches and methodologies.

The Courtauld is seeking to appoint an innovative scholar who specialises in lens- and time-based media (c. 1900 to the present). The successful candidate will complement the existing strengths of the History of Art Department and have a research focus in the histories of new media technologies understood in its broadest sense, which may include photography, film, audio, digital, post-internet, computer-based and documentary practices. The candidate is expected to be able to situate their work in the theoretical and historiographic debates in their specialised research area and engage with current issues in the discipline of Art History. We especially encourage applications from scholars who engage with these issues from global perspectives. This is an excellent opportunity to develop new directions in the field of lens- and time-based media, with exciting potential for digital cultures research and teaching collaboration as part of our new strategic relationship with King’s College London.

Teaching at The Courtauld takes a variety of forms, from small-group seminars, lectures, and tutorials, to teaching in front of works of art in galleries and museums both within the UK and internationally. The post-holder will also undertake research, supervise research students, participate in our thriving research community, and engage in activity that increases public awareness of and access to Courtauld resources, including the gallery.

We are seeking to appoint at Lecturer level and especially welcome applications from early career scholars who are starting to establish records in research, publication, curriculum design and/or reform, teaching & academic administration. The appointed academic will play an important role in transforming teaching and research at The Courtauld.

All faculty are entitled to regular sabbaticals from their teaching. In addition, they are encouraged to apply for external grants & fellowships, supported by The Courtauld’s dedicated Research Department.

The Courtauld is committed to equality, diversity & inclusion. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds as we have under-representation that we wish to address. The Courtauld warmly welcomes applicants from all backgrounds, including those through the Skilled Workers Route to work in the UK.

Applicants who are interested in discussing the role informally before submitting an application may contact the Head of Art History, Dr Caroline Levitt (caroline.levitt@courtauld.ac.uk).

For further information, please see the Job Description & Person Specification.

To apply, please complete the online application, which will require you to include a supporting statement of no more than 1500 words, and the names of 3 referees.
