The Flood Hazard Research Centre (FHRC) at Middlesex University seeks to appoint a Researcher (either a Research Fellow or a Research Assistant) to continue the longstanding work on estimating the losses from flooding undertaken by FHRC for over 40 years. The post holder will contribute to the Multi-Coloured Manual (MCM) suite of data, techniques and methodologies on the benefits of flood and coastal risk management (www.mcm-online.co.uk).
The successful candidate will undertake a range of research tasks for updating the Multi-Coloured Manual including the identification and selection of relevant data, developing methodologies to improve and/or broaden the range of potential flood losses estimated. In particular, we would like to better consider and represent the uncertainties in estimating flood losses and broaden the flood loss estimation methodologies to represent flood resilience. Working on the MCM project the successful candidate will hold a PhD/Masters (or be close to completion) in a relevant discipline such geography, environmental sciences, economics, applied statistics, demography and/or computer/data science. You will have strong data handling skills and experience of quantitative research design and analysis techniques. Although an advantage, it is not necessary for applicants to have experience of flood risk management, but be willing to learn current approaches to flood loss estimation and apply techniques from their past research to this project. In particular, we are interested in candidates with experience of uncertainty analysis, risk and loss estimation, vulnerability analysis and/or flood risk/resilience assessment, although will consider applications from other areas of data science. Additionally, you will have excellent communication and organisational skills and have experience in the production of research outputs, including journal publications. The appointed researcher will be employed full time on the MCM project and contribute on all areas of the project from gathering and analysing data to disseminating research outputs. Under the guidance of the well-established team of experienced researchers, the post holder will assume some responsibility for some administrative tasks and project liaison. The post holder will be based in Flood Hazard Research Centre (reporting to Dr Sally Priest) in the Department of Natural Sciences at Middlesex University.
FHRC is a centre of expertise in the socio-economic assessment of flood and floodplain management options. Our experienced academics and skilled research students specialise in the interaction between people and the environment, as well as the analysis and appraisal of environmental policies. The post is available for 12 months and due to project deadlines we require the post holder to be available as soon as possible.
The interviews are expected to take place the week beginning the 27th February 2023.
More information on the MCM can be found in the job description and at www.mcm-online.co.uk.
