WORKLOAD: Circa 40% Research, 55% Teaching, 5% Admin  

THE ROLE:  

The University of Hull is seeking to appoint a Professor of Immersive Design, within the Faculty of Arts, Cultures and Education. The School of the Arts is a vibrant and distinctive community of academics across a range of different subject areas that include Drama, Music and Music Production, and Screen (which includes Film, Game Design, Graphic Design, and Media). The physical resources are first rate and include: a fully working theatre; a concert hall; music studios; and a recently completed Media hub (2021).   

You will be based within the Screen team but given the senior nature of the role will be expected to contribute towards school, faculty, and university activities. This a key role to develop research and knowledge exchange capacity in this area within the faculty. As the Professor of Immersive Design, you will have knowledge and skills within traditional and virtual production as well as immersive media. Your expertise is required in areas such as real-time graphics, game engines, VFX, extended reality, digital art, and digital filmmaking. We encourage you to apply if you can present clear evidence of potential for excellence in teaching, research, and continuing professional developments. You will also lead the new MA Immersive Art Design which includes modules in extended realities (XR) and contribute to the undergraduate curriculum. You will be expected to supervise PGR students and develop research focus within the subject area supporting the strategic plans developed within the school and university.  

 DUTIES:  

  • Participate in the design, development and delivery of a broad range of programmes of study which may include entirely new courses. 
  • Develop, design and deliver teaching material across a range of modules and programmes within a subject area using appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods.  
  • Provide research leadership and develop performance research culture.   
  • Engage in a personal research programme of international status and quality that makes a significant contribution to the research strategy of the Department.  
  • Attract significant research funding or other support for primary research and to mentor colleagues to submit bids for funding.  
  • Contribute to the overall management of the department in areas such as budget management and business planning.  

REQUIRED:   

  • A doctoral qualification  
  • A relevant teaching qualification / Senior Fellow of HEA  
  • A good understanding of the academic disciplines within the unit and has a specialism in one or more areas of the department’s work (creative industries, drama, film, game and graphic design, media, music and music production).  

EXPERIENCE:   

  • A substantial reputation internationally for research, reflected in sustained output, level of innovation, impact on discipline or profession and recognition  
  • A senior academic with an outstanding track record and reputation within their chosen career path
