The Department of Earth Sciences is looking for an Assistant IT Manager to help design and support our complex range of IT services. The Department, including the Sedgwick Museum, is based on two main sites, one in central Cambridge and the other at the Bullard Laboratories in West Cambridge, see Department of Earth Sciences (esc.cam.ac.uk) for further information.
The person appointed will initially be deployed to work on Linux infrastructure and support at the Bullard Laboratories. They will be expected to work flexibly across all areas of the Department and travel between the central and West Cambridge sites on a regular basis.
The role will be hands-on, providing IT support requiring a breadth of technical skill and working with a range of technologies across desktop and server management.
Key responsibilities include:
You will be experienced in IT support and management, have excellent communication skills and strong work ethics as well as the ability and motivation to learn new skills and keep abreast of new technologies. You will prioritize immediate tasks, be proficient in UNIX/Linux server and desktop management and have experience of networking (HP/Cisco switches); other skills such as shell scripting, programming (Python, Golang), Active Directory, and configuration management would also be advantageous.
