Position Overview

Location: London, Devon House (St Katharine Docks)

Term: Part-time (0.5 FTE) or Full-time; Permanent

The Role

Northeastern University London wishes to appoint an Assistant Professor (Teaching & Scholarship) in Software Engineering. The appointee will primarily teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in software design and implementation.

We wish to appoint a specialist in the areas of software engineering, including web development. Preference may be given to candidates with active interests in the relationship of the use of software to employment contexts and diversity and inclusion.

Core duties will include development and provision of innovative and inclusive teaching in relevant areas of Computer Science at undergraduate and postgraduate levels (e.g. Object-Oriented Program Design, Foundations of Software Engineering and Web Development); and professional service commensurate to career stage.

We particularly encourage applications from those with an interest in innovative teaching, learning and assessment; those with experience of supporting a wide variety of students; and those belonging to groups underrepresented in UK higher education. We are open to appointing on a reduced fraction or job-share basis, subject to our business needs.

Department

Computing, Engineering, and Natural Sciences is undergoing a major growth at Northeastern University London. It is home to four interdisciplinary undergraduate dual degree (in UK and US) programs in the areas of Data Science, Data Science and Politics, Computer Science and Business, and Computer Science and Philosophy; and four postgraduate programs in the areas of AI, Data Science, Software Engineering, and Digital Leadership.

The department is a major part of Northeastern University’s first-year student mobility program, offering undergraduate courses in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Healthcare, striving to inspire and equip entering students to be outstanding scientists.

Opportunities for disciplinary and interdisciplinary research and scholarship abound: the department aims to unite computing, engineering and natural sciences with humanities based on ground-breaking research and research-oriented teaching practices. The successful appointee will have an opportunity to join one of the research institutes at Northeastern University, based on expertise.

Person Specification Criteria

Qualifications

  • PhD completed, or near completion (all but dissertation), or equivalent professional experience, in a relevant area (essential)
  • FHEA status, or equivalent, achieved or expected (desirable)
  • A teaching qualification (FHEA or equivalent).

  • Demonstrates, through evidence, excellent ability as to be adaptable, innovative, and inclusive in the role as advertised with regards to teaching and service
  • Flexibility and capacity to teach across a wide range of courses
  • Ability to develop excellent educational provision in areas with significant appeal to students, including at postgraduate level
  • Willingness and capacity to undertake continuous professional development in the use of technology, software, and data in relation to Software Engineering, and to teach on these matters
