Our Department of Engineering and Technology houses two EPSRC Centres of Excellence (Ion Beam Centre, IBC and Centre for Precision Technologies, CPT) and several other research centres and institutes. The EPSRC IBC studies the interaction of energetic particles with matter and feeds into developments in nuclear materials, semiconductors, and nanotechnology. The CPT is known for its innovation in measurement techniques and application of novel additive manufacturing technologies for applications including medical implants and aeroengines. We are also an EPSRC doctoral training partner in Materials. Our Institute of Railway Research, IRR has helped to improve the design and safe operation of railway vehicles and track including key performance aspects such as suspension design, wheel-rail contact, traction, and braking.

As part of our continued investment programme in staff and facilities, we are looking to appoint two ambitious, successful Lecturers to join our mechanical engineering team. Our focus is on excellent candidates in areas of Solid Mechanics and Design Applications, Industrial Applications of Thermofluids, Production Management and Control Systems and Materials and Testing, who will be able to deliver research led and industrially relevant teaching both in the UK and overseas locations. You will be supported to grow your research career and be expected to develop your teaching capabilities, both within your discipline as well as outside your immediate specialism within the wider Mechanical subject area.

From September 2022, the Department introduced a new teaching portfolio referred to as EnABLE (Engineering in an Activity Based Learning Environment) which is an eclectic blend of active learning methods including Problem-, Project- and Design-Based Learning and techniques known as CDIO (Conceive Design Implement and Operate).

You will have a doctoral degree and outstanding research track record in engineering or a closely related field, together with excellent teaching and communication skills. You will be qualified to teach a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules and have the ability to advance and teach the theory, methods, tools, and practices on all levels of the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum of mechanical engineering. A keen interest in, and commitment to, the application of novel pedagogical methods to support our EnABLE delivery style is essential.

The School is committed to Athena SWAN principles and the promotion of equality and diversity and is proud to hold a Bronze Athena SWAN Award.
