UK Data Archive, IT Operations Team
The UK Data Archive is the lead organisation of the UK Data Service, which provides unified access to regional, national and international social and economic data, and provides support, guidance and training for the development of skills in data curation and use. It is the UK’s largest social sciences data repository with an international profile.
Duties of the Role
We are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to develop, monitor and continuously improve the IT infrastructure as we migrate to cloud services over the next three years. This is a pivotal role in IT Operations and if you are looking to be part of a small, friendly team that’s not afraid to challenge the conventional way of doing things, then we want to hear from you.
The scope of responsibility is wide: you will be designing and implementing new pieces of infrastructure, both at a platform and an application level. You will proactively monitor the UKDA infrastructure, analysing and reporting on its health and performance. Additionally, you will work with all members of the team at all levels to help ensure that UKDA’s IT services are underpinned by the most forward-thinking and optimal infrastructure possible. We encourage all our staff to share their innovative ideas and there is a large international Research Infrastructure community in which you’ll be able to participate.
A full list of duties and responsibilities can be found within the job pack.
Qualifications and Skills required
We are looking for an IT engineer with good all-round data skills and ideally some programming experience who has had some exposure to systems management. What we really value is intellectual curiosity, a willingness to embrace change and the ability to rapidly acquire new skills.
You will have worked with both Windows and Linux, cloud and on-premises infrastructures and you will be comfortable explaining infrastructure concepts to both 1st line engineers and managers.
This post is fixed term until 31/03/2024 due to the cyclical nature of the project funding. Whilst this a full-time post (36 hours per week), a job share arrangement could be considered for the right candidates and we would similarly welcome applications from those looking to work 0.5 FTE (18 hours per week) on this basis.
This post involves access to Government systems, information or data and will be subject to the staff vetting process. Further information can be found in the job pack.
At the University of Essex, internationalism and diversity is central to who we are and what we do.
