The Role

We are seeking to appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO) who can ensure that the University complies with all its statutory data and information governance obligations.  The DPO role is a governance and advisory role applying, in-depth knowledge of data protection laws to the University sector. You will maintain and further an infrastructure, which both facilitates the rights of data subjects (including past, present and future visitors, applicants, students, staff, contractors, clients etc.) and enables the University to achieve its core activities and legal responsibilities through accountability at each and every level of the organisation.  

Main Responsibilities

  • Applying in-depth knowledge of data protection laws, ensuring the University complies with all current and future information governance legislation related to data protection, e-privacy, Freedom of Information and regulatory codes of practice
  • Enabling the University to achieve its core activities and legal responsibilities through accountability, at every level of the organisation
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders eg: University leadership team, the ICO, legal teams and other stakeholders at all levels to ensure good information handling practices, and implementing changes where needed
  • Advising on best practice and making clear and timely recommendations where risks are identified

The Ideal Candidate

  • A degree level qualified professional with demonstrable experience of operating in a DPO capacity in a similar organisational setting
  • Excellent knowledge in this specialist area and passionate about finding solutions
  • Will think about data protection strategically and able to work with considerable autonomy, as well as being a hands-on collaborator with day-to-day requests and core business activities
  • A pragmatic problem-solver who can manage a variety of tasks
  • A commitment to delivering and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion
