Design Teaching Fellow (Part Time)

University of Cambridge - Department of Architecture

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £33,348 to £43,155 pa, pro rata
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 24th May 2023
Closes: 16th June 2023
Job Ref: GC36813

Applications are invited for Design Fellowships in the Department of Architecture. These part-time, fixed-term posts are available for 12 months from 1 October 2023 until 30 September 2024. All posts may be renewable annually, in certain circumstances. The posts are fractional, i.e. posts are 26% of full time, c. 9.5 hours per week - both in and out of term time.

The purpose of the posts is to teach architectural design on the three-year undergraduate BA (Architecture Tripos) course, which leads to RIBA/ARB Part I qualification; and on the two-year MArch, which leads to RIBA part 2 qualification.

All of these positions are rotating appointments, in response to changes and trends in the profession, and may be renewed, annually, in certain circumstances.

The Design Fellows teaching on the undergraduate and graduate courses are part of a team of c. 30 studio teachers teaching architectural design. The undergraduate 1st year course is taught as one group, 2nd- and 3rd-year and MArch courses are split into studio groups, each led by a pair of Design Fellows. The Design Fellows will teach alongside another Design Fellow (i.e. in pairs); they will deliver weekly group teaching and one-to-one supervisions, and develop studio projects in collaboration with the undergraduate Studio Teaching Coordinator.

It is anticipated that the incoming first year cohort will have c. 75, previously a typical year cohort has 60-70 students, but numbers may fluctuate, depending on how many students achieve their offers.  We envisage that the First Year Studio Teaching team will have eight members: the Design Fellow leading First Year Studio (0.4FTE), and seven Design Fellow colleagues.

Candidates must have: a very good first degree or equivalent in Architecture, Engineering or a cognate discipline, with exemption from Part I of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) or equivalent examinations; a postgraduate Diploma, MSc, MArch, MPhil or equivalent qualification carrying exemption from Part II of the RIBA examinations; experience of studio teaching and current experience as a practice-based architect.

Please see page 14 of the attached Further Information document for how to apply.  Please note all applications must be made on an individual basis.

The closing date for applications is midnight (BST) on Friday 16 June 2023.

Interviews of short-listed candidates are expected to take place in the week beginning 26 June, subject to change.
