Aston University has been recently awarded a collaborative project led by Connected Places Catapult and partnered by local universities, Birmingham City Council and the Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The project, DIATOMIC (Digital lnnovAtion TransfOrMatlve Change), is an interdisciplinary cross-cutting framework for building the innovation capability and capacity to drive growth and prosperity locally and enhance the reputation of the West Midlands globally. 

One of the tasks on DIATOMIC project Aston University is taking is to develop a Digital Twin (DT) of Hydrogen Fuel Cells used for Electric Vehicles to facilitate the condition monitoring and life cycle management of fuel cells, such as planning the maintenance, remanufacture and reuse. It includes the development of cloud based digital twin framework such as designing the system concept and architecture of the DT framework, and also the development of a digital twin model of fuel cells to predict their operational performance and remaining useful life (RUL) by data analytics and machine learning. 

This is an interdisciplinary project. You will be based in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, working between Mechanical, Biomedical and Design Engineering department and Computer Science department. You are expected to learn, develop and adapt digital technologies to the Hydrogen Fuel Cell operations and condition monitoring in order to optimize their life cycle performance and availability.

You need to have research background, experience and PhD degree in the relevant fields, such as smart systems and manufacturing, control and machine learning, and computer science. You need to be comfortable to work on interdisciplinary project and be willing and able to learn new skills as required. Good team working and communication skills are required, and you are expected to produce high quality publications from the conducted work.
