The School of Economics is now seeking exceptional scholars to join us as Senior Research Fellow in the field of Public Health. The post will be offered on a fixed-term contract with the University of Nottingham Ningbo China for a period of up to three years with 6 months probation.

Job outline: 

The Evidence Based Medicine Laboratory at UNNC is seeking to hire a senior health statistician (equivalent to senior research fellow). The Evidence Based Medicine Laboratory at UNNC conducts real-world research in the areas of epidemiology, burden of illness, and comparative effectiveness for pharmaceutical and other health care interventions. The senior health statistician will report to the Director of the Evidence Based Medicine Laboratory and will be responsible for providing the following support: creation of analytic data sets from secondary and primary data sources, perform meta-analysis, conduct statistical analyses/ comparisons, and design and creation of charts, graphs, tables, and reports. The Senior Statistician is also expected to contribute, collaborate, and lead grant writing and research conducted by the Evidence-Based Medicine Laboratory. Although, the position is largely research focused, the senior health statistician is also expected to provide supervision and mentorship of graduate research assistants and undergraduate interns and participate in the instruction of professional development courses and summer schools conducted by the Evidence-Based Medicine Laboratory. 

Qualifications: 

Essential

  • A PhD in Statistics or Biometrics with a preferred background in either Epidemiology or evidence-based medicine
  • Familiarity and knowledge in the execution of these activities in STATA, R, or equivalent packages as well as programming in R as well as Microsoft office tools such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Experience we advanced and complex systematic review methods (e.g., diagnostic test accuracy reviews, network meta-analysis, prognostic reviews, individual patient data meta-analysis, Bayesian statistics)
  • Support lead scientists throughout the systematic review process
  • Proactively address complex analytical issues, and handle unforeseen circumstances and actively monitor and apply new analytical techniques
  • Provide support drafting materials for project-related content as well as internal research
  • Identify and effectively use internal and external data sources and literature references to support client projects
  • Assess data quality and completeness. Create queries for calculating metrics and benchmarks for communicating data issues
  • Review and approve work from systematic reviewers and methodologists on project deliverables
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Chinese, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex information in both languages
  • High analytical ability to analyse and illuminate data, interprets reports, evaluate and criticise texts and bring new insights
  • Ability to creatively apply relevant research approaches, models, techniques, and methods
  • Ability to assess and organise resource requirements and deploy effectively
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with others, both internally and externally
  • Accuracy, attention to detail and time management skills
  • A strong desire to mentor and grow the expertise within the group
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team with a high degree of self-motivation

Desirable

  • Previous success in gaining support for externally funded research projects
  • Experience of developing new approaches, models, techniques, or methods in research area
  • Ability to foster a research culture and commitment to learn in others 

Main responsibilities: 

  • Leading research projects, take the lead on, plan, develop and conduct individual and/or collaborative research objectives, projects and proposals either as an individual or as part of a broader programme
  • Making research proposals, acquire, analyse, interpret and evaluate research findings/data using approaches, techniques, models and methods selected or developed for the purpose
  • Developing research collaboration and network, build relationships and collaborate actively with internal and external contacts, nationally and if appropriate internationally to complete research projects and to advance the discipline
  • Making publications, communicate complex and conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding as well as to peers, using high level skills and a range of media
  • Attending seminars /conferences
  • Organizing research meetings with collaborators for research projects/interests/knowledge exchange/commercialisation
  • Guiding or co-supervising future PhD and Masters students in public health/health economics
  • Be responsible for resolving problems to meet research objectives and deadlines
  • Supporting the activities of the Evidence Based Medicine Laboratory and its director
  • Supporting centre director for local admin /training programmes
  • Supporting potential research opportunities in evidence-based medicine and public health
  • Supporting or guiding colleagues’ research who are working in health/health economics
  • Other Admin work (e.g. organizing meetings with local CDC, developing training programme)
  • To participate in training and staff development events as trainer or trainee as appropriate
  • To maintain appropriate professional development, expertise and awareness
  • To undertake other tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be required
