We wish to recruit a post-graduate research assistant to the project “Automating Representation Choice for AI Tools”. The project is studying how humans use notations and diagrams. The overall aim is to develop AI systems that can help select effective representation to use for problem solving and learning.
The project is a joint endeavor between the Universities of Sussex and Cambridge. You will be based at Sussex and work under the supervision of Prof Peter Cheng and collaborate closely with Dr Grecia Garcia Garcia.
We have developed novel interactive software systems including: (a) a tutor to support instructors to select good representations for mathematical problem solving and learning; (b) a tool to enable researchers to model the memory structures that users’ build as they interpret representations.
You will run cognitive experiments with human participants in order to evaluate the systems. The main task will be to collect, collate and code data from questionnaires about users’ abilities and video recordings of them interacting with the systems. Depending on your particular skills you may support the analysis and reporting of the experiments.
Candidates for this position should have a keen interest in cognitive science or cognitive psychology and experience in at least one of these areas:
When applying, please fill in the application form and attach a full CV. Use the space for additional information to explain your interest in this area of research and how your skills are suited to the project, referring to the ‘essential criteria’ and ‘essential role-specific criteria’ as outlined in the Job Description.
