About the Role
This is an exciting time to join Queen Mary as we develop our sustainability and climate strategy and action plan. You will work with teams and departments to embed sustainability into all operations, acting as an expert on environmental management, data monitoring and reporting. The Sustainability team manages our certified ISO 14001 environmental management system (EMS), which will be a key focus of this role.
You will support the delivery of the staff and student Sustainability and Climate Action Network, and work with other departments to embed sustainability into operations.
You will ensure that our work on carbon reduction is evidence led, including gathering carbon footprint data that is reflective of our operations, and establishing an accurate and comprehensive database in line with the SCEF.
About You
You should hold a relevant degree in a sustainable development discipline or equivalent work experience.
You will need to have relevant experience in a similar role, ideally in a large and complex organisation. The role will require extensive knowledge and practical experience of implementing, managing, auditing and continually improving ISO 14001 certified EMS.
You are passionate about sustainability and able to inspire others. You will have the ability to communicate at all levels and to create and present content in varied formats.
You should have excellent numerical/analytical skills.
Practical experience in waste management, preferably in open/public spaces, is also a requirement.
About the Department
Our Team is part of the Estates and Facilities Directorate within Professional Services.
About Queen Mary
At Queen Mary, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable.
Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. And we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.
We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.
Benefits
We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum, a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and campus facilities including an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus.
The post is based at Department W. It is a full time (35 hours/week), permanent appointment. The starting salary will be Grade 5 (£42,405 - £49,785 per annum), inclusive of London Allowance.
Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
We particularly welcome applications from people who identify as BAME groups and people with disability as these groups are underrepresented in the sustainability sector.
The closing date for applications is 30 November 2023.
Interviews are expected to be held w/c 11 December 2023.
