Senior Grant Writer and Innovation Consultant

BAM Innovation Ltd

BAM Innovation is seeking an exceptional senior grant writer to take a leadership position within our fast-growing grant writing team. BAM is a boutique grant writing consultancy supporting a wide range of companies and universities in securing grants from sources including Innovate UK, UKRI, and NIHR. We take a uniquely proactive approach to grant writing, making life as easy as possible for our clients by supporting idea generation, taking the lead on designing projects, and owning the writing process from start-to-finish.

BAM was founded two years ago, and now has a team of 8 in-house and contract grant writers. We have had an exciting first two years, working with more than 200 innovative clients to secure six- to eight-figure grants. The Senior Grant Writer and Innovation Consultant will be a key new senior role, with significant progression opportunities as BAM continues to grow to meet spiralling demand for our services.

BAM has also begun to develop our own range of medical devices and AI-based creative technologies, supported by three Innovate UK grants. There will be opportunities to get involved in this activity, too.

Position Outline

As a Senior Grant Writer and Innovation Consultant you will lead on grant writing for industry and university clients across multiple sectors and disciplines. You will confidently take the lead in initial meetings with clients, providing expert advice and guidance to define/refine exceptionally fundable project ideas; you will then craft compelling, well-researched, bulletproof proposals to funders including Innovate UK, UKRI and NIHR amongst others.

You will manage ongoing relationships with long-term clients, supporting them in pipelining their research and innovations, and developing mastery of their fields; and will support one-off clients, requiring a chameleonic ability to continuously adapt to new disciplines, sectors and challenges.

You will have blissfully minimal administrative requirements, beyond uploading proposals into funder submission portals.

As BAM continues to grow, there will be opportunities to expand the role in new directions, including providing strategic direction and supervision to the growing grant writing team and getting involved in our own research, development and commercialisation activities.

You will report to BAM’s two Directors/Co-Founders.

Flexible Working

BAM offers the flexibility to work remotely. We collaborate closely as a team, using digital tools, with occasional (optional) team away days, usually in our open working hub in Warminster. We invest in our team, with all the development activity you need.

Summary Job Description

1. Writing high-quality proposals to strict deadlines, including:

  • Leading initial client meetings to define project scopes, work packages, business models/pricing strategies, etc.
  • Supporting collaboration building where required, drawing upon your own and BAM’s networks.
  • Bringing creativity – developing content without relying on the client.
  • Conveying complex technical information in a compelling way, whilst meeting all funder requirements and assessor quirks.
  • Understanding and presenting commercial business cases, revenue and growth projections.
  • Identifying and being able to quantify potential wider impacts, e.g., on economies, society, regions, the environment.
  • Submitting proposals to immovable funder deadlines.

2. Managing relationships with long-term clients, including:

  • Advising on innovation and grant pipelining over 1-3 year timescales.
  • Leading idea generation/pipelining workshops.
  • Advising on funder requirements of running grants.
  • Developing proposals, as above.

3. Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the innovation landscape, including:

  • Staying up-to-date with new funding competitions.
  • Maintaining awareness of national innovation infrastructure and opportunities.
  • Maintaining awareness of key government policies and strategies impacting innovation.

4. Performing other duties, from time-to-time, which may include:

  • Advising BAM’s junior grant writers.
  • Reviewing proposals written by junior grant writers.

Experience, Skills and Abilities

You will have a sound understanding of Innovate UK, UKRI and preferably also NIHR funding competitions, requirements and quirks. You will have a strong track record of leading on the development and writing of multiple successful six- and seven-figure proposals to these funders. You will be able to confidently work on technical and scientific proposals, with the ability and experience to understand complex ideas and contexts across a wide range of sectors and disciplines. You will be confident in engaging with teams from industry and academia, and willing to challenge them where required. You will have a collaborative approach to working, with an openness to brainstorming ideas with colleagues, and with receptiveness to comments from BAM Directors and clients. You will have a solid grasp of project budgets. You will be comfortable in a world based on constant immovable deadlines.
