This is an exciting opportunity to join the Division of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences  in the role of Technician (Mechanical Engineering) and to be part of the technical services team, delivering outstanding student experience and research excellence.

The role of Technician (Mechanical Engineering) is essential to the successful day-to-day operation of the teaching and research activities taking place within the division. Working as part of a technical support team, you will provide a comprehensive, immediate and specialised support service to staff and students within the Division. You will be specifically working with and setting up and preparing resources for engineering or scientific equipment including gear analysis, beam analysis, robots and cobots, 3d printers and laser cutters, tensile test and fatigue test equipment.

You will use your knowledge, skills and experience to solve problems independently, ensuring the effective day to day operation of facilities and resources - providing excellent customer service at all times. You will be working under supervision within a busy technical support team responding to wide range of enquiries so planning and prioritising work will be essential in this role.  

This role includes the option for development into a degree level apprenticeship in the field of Robotics and AI. The role will commence immediately with the degree component beginning in September 2024 with a duration of 48 months. Robotics and AI is of strategic importance to the division and as such this role will develop into supporting our 3 robotic labs over time.

As a Technician you will:

  • Under supervision, perform work in accordance with the aims and objectives of a given scenario, raising any issues with senior staff. Deal with both routine and less straightforward queries
  • Assist with purchasing including ordering and distributing goods. Undertake a range of tasks to ensure adequate loan and return of resources
  • Provide local inductions, training and demonstrations of techniques and equipment skills and best practice in the work area
  • Operate basic equipment, carrying out straightforward maintenance. Provide assistance to senior staff support more complex equipment.

To be successful in the role you will have/be:

  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise confidently with students and staff at all levels
  • Attention to detail and ability to work accurately
  • Organised with the ability to prioritise a wide range of workload with competing priorities
  • Knowledge of basic safety regulations and procedures.
  • Formal training in mechanical engineering via vocational routes such as BTEC National Diploma, HNC/HND, advanced modern apprenticeship or NVQ.
  • Demonstrable experience in technical support in a mechanical engineering discipline, for example maintenance, machinist, production or automation.
