The Department for Research, Engagement & Innovation Services (REIS) supports academics, researchers, staff and students in achieving knowledge transfer and research impact. We do this by helping innovators, staff and entrepreneurs use commercial avenues to develop their ideas and expertise for the benefit of society, the economy, themselves and the University.
In order to meet its future ambitions, the University is looking to invest and build the core IP commercialisation and Enterprise function. This is a high profile role where you will provide leadership, strategic direction and oversight for the operation, management and delivery of the University’s activities associated with IP commercialisation, consultancy and enterprise formation. This includes the management and governance of the institution’s IP Commercialisation functions & policies. The successful candidate will be appointed as a director of the University’s s wholly owned subsidiary for commercialisation activities, Swansea Innovations Ltd.
You will be responsible in relation to all matters relating to Intellectual Property, commercialisation and consultancy services. You will also work closely with and support other colleagues in Engagement, Innovation & Entrepreneurship (EIE), and Research & Development Divisions of REIS, including liaising with the central IP & Contracts support staff, bid writers and Faculty Research & Innovation hub teams to maintain an overview of all IP commercialisation and related contracts in your portfolio.

The Head of IP & Commercialisation will be an experienced knowledge exchange professional with accomplished leadership and ability to develop and deliver on strategic priorities.
A seasoned professional and inspirational leader, you will be a persuasive communicator, scientifically or creatively literate, with the ability to engage effectively with our Senior Leadership Team, academics and stakeholders who work with us. You will be someone with proven commercial experience in developing mutually beneficial and sustained relationships and capturing these in contractual terms. The role requires proficiency in negotiating complex deal terms, agility in problem-solving and determination to maintain progress toward achieving prioritised objectives.
Experience associated with IP licensing or company formation within a University or relevant public or private sector context is essential. Educated to degree level in a related discipline or equivalent qualifications and experience, there are a number of skills which would set you up for success in this role, eg having a background directly related to IP & Commercialisation, having significant experience in leadership, creating and delivering successful strategic plans and KPIs. The ability to problem solve and lead a team to manage and grow an active IP portfolio, license negotiations, knowing how & where to exploit different forms of IP, as well as experience in securing income and investment.
