The University of Sheffield, in partnership with the Universities of Manchester and Leeds, is working to build critical components of the business start-up ecosystem in the ‘Northern Triangle’. The collaboration between the three universities began in 2017 and has led to the incorporation and fundraising of Northern Gritstone Ltd. The three Universities are now embarking on a new challenge - cultivating business talent in the North of England and fostering a vibrant startup ecosystem to support University spinout companies in particular.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong background in the startup sector and experience in ecosystem development. As a Business Mentor Community Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring the success of our Northern Triangle Talent Project by building strong connections with the Universities’ Commercialisation Teams, securing top-tier business mentors, and designing an impactful mentorship delivery model. This role requires leadership skills, experience in managing complex projects, and an appreciation of the pressures on founders and business mentors.

This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of shaping the future of Northern England’s startup landscape. If you are passionate about innovation, have a proven track record in the startup sector, and are eager to make a significant impact, we invite you to apply and be a part of this transformative journey.

Responsibilities and Person Specification

In this role, you will be responsible for developing a mentorship programme and system to complement the commercialisation journey at Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester. You will monitor KPIs and objectives while fostering university partnerships, often travelling between Manchester and Leeds to bridge connections across locations.

To be successful in this role, you will need to keep up to date with leading mentorship concepts, attract top-tier mentors and guide team activities. Your communication skills will be vital to showcasing the mentor community's value and impact at various events.

The ideal candidate for this role will bring substantial startup sector experience and embrace entrepreneurial journeys with an in-depth understanding of how start-ups evolve. Managing diverse projects and fostering collaborative relationships, coupled with your network or matrix Management expertise, will be essential to the project's cohesion.

You will need to possess a strategic mindset, excel in resource organisation, leverage digital technology for efficiency, and demonstrate robust problem-solving abilities. Leadership, team motivation, an extensive professional network, a commitment to ongoing development, and expertise in budget management are also key capabilities.
